A stormy sea at Stackpole Head this morning

Quite an impressive sea along the Limestone cliffs of the Castlemartin peninsula this morning. Not too many birds noted offshore in the Stackpole to Stack Rocks area, apart from local herring gulls and fulmars, plus some more distant kittiwakes.

The waves were quite impressive though, at times smashing into Stackpole Head and sending plumes of water and spray well up the c.100 foot high cliffs onto the plateau above.

A narrow inlet with a sea-cave supporting a small guillemot breeding colony (known locally as "Hindsight") was particularly being impacted. It will be interesting to see if this bit of cliff survives intact after the winter storms have abated. Cracks that have opened up on the plateau surface above have gradually been getting larger over the years, as the cliffs gradually appear to be pulling part. If some of this area eventually falls away the guillemot cave will probably be more exposed. We shall have to wait and see!
